In terms of both goods and trademark, the production line of Joost Thooft & Labouchere continued the work of the historical delftware workshop De Porceleyne Fles (“The Porcelain Bottle”), established in 1653. In 1800 De Porceleyne Fles was one of ten companies that had retained the celebrated tradition of delftware production; by the mid-19th century it was the only one. In 1876 Joost Thooft’s company became the successor to De Porceleyne Fles and continued the production of delftware, with underglaze painting covered with a fine transparent glaze in the same spirit as in the 17th century. However, Joost Thooft & Labouchere also applied Renaissance techniques in adopting aspects of Art Nouveau style, as is most clearly evident in the company’s collection of exhibits for the Exposition Universelle of 1900 in Paris.
